Fifteen youths from Nakuru County have been selected to join Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in a recruitment exercise that seeks to strengthen agency.

Speaking to the public at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru town after the recruitment exercise, KWS spokesman Paul Gathitu said that 11 men and three young women recruits were selected from the 500 youths who had turned up for the recruitment exercise.

“In line with the rules laid down by the KWS management, we have selected 15 youth, 11 men and three ladies aged 18-26 years who will join our college for wildlife training,” said Gathitu.

Gathitu said that KWS needs 600 rangers to help in the fight against poaching.

The recruitment was, however, met with sharp criticism from youth who had scored grade D+ and above in KCSE.

“The recruitment process lacked transparency,” said Jared Kamau from Bahati constituency who had scored D+

Susan Jeptoo from Kuresoi North claimed that she has a degree in education but she failed to secure admission.

 “It’s disheartening to see the best minds being denied an opportunity to serve the nation,” lamented Jeptoo.

The selecting panel said that the minimum education requirement was D- .
