A total of 15 people in Mombasa and Kilifi Counties have died after being electrocuted.
According to a human rights lobby Haki Africa, the data collected by the human rights organisation from the year 2016 to 2018 showed that most cases involved children and house maids.
While releasing the report at Haki Africa offices on Thursday evening, the organisation’s Programmes officer Francis Auma said that most houses were poorly connected to power as most power cables hanged loosely even inside the houses a situation which posed serious danger to locals.
Auma said that three cases were reported in Changamwe constituency in 2016 while two more cases were reported within Mombasa Island.
“In Rabai constituency within Kilifi County one case was reported where one person was burnt beyond recognition and the case reported at Rabai Police station,” added Auma.
Auma also revealed that in the year 2017, Nyali constituency recorded five cases, Changamwe a single case was reported and the same figure recorded in Likoni area.
“The recent case we recorded last week was from Jomvu area in Jomvu constituency where a three year old girl Elizabeth Ndanu was burnt beyond recognition after being electrocuted,” he added.
Auma said that the cases were increasing every day adding that Kenya power should conduct a thorough inspection of all houses connected to power to establish if the connection complies with the Kenya power standards.
He said that most likely most of the cases are not reported and Kenya power should issue public statement concerning the deaths caused by electricity faulty.
Auma insisted that Kenya power is to blame for the electrocution cases.
