Speaking during an overview of the standard gauge railway report, Kenya railway managing director, Atanas Maina said that the project will benefit many travellers by using railway and also increase the income of the cooperation.

The project aims at increasing the number of travellers from five thousand to five hundred thousand people every day. In addition, the organisation also has plans to build a new railway which will link the city centre to suburbs such as Rongai and Ngong in Kajiado County.

There are currently 32 railway stations within Nairobi that have been revived and built to champion this plan. Such plans are also expected to introduce in Mombasa and Kisumu tackle transport challenges in those areas.

‘‘So far, 80% of the standard gauge railways has been completed and the first face will be completed by next year June,’’ said Maina.

He added that the project has created over three thousand jobs and by the end of the whole project over 150 million people in East and Central Africa will benefit from it.

So far, the government of Kenya has identified two corridors for a high capacity transport system for both freight and passengers.

Over 1700 tonnes are expected to be transported annually from the port of Mombasa to other places within this region.
