Photo/ the-star.co.keThe second batch of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) cargo wagons has been delivered at the Port of Mombasa. The 150 flat cargo wagons were received by Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina at the port for freight transportation. The 25-tonne flat wagons have been designed to run at a speed of 120 km/h and carry up to 70 tonnes.According to Maina, the wagons will make it easy to ferry containers including tractors, automobiles, steel and box-cargo among other containers from Mombasa to various parts of the nation. He also said that the flat wagons will ease congestion at the Mombasa port. “The demand for transportation in the country today exceeds the capacity of the roads and the existing railway line. These flat wagons will provide a working solution for transportation of freight in the country and will go a long way in de-congesting the Port of Mombasa,” said Maina, as quoted by the Nation. He further said that the flat cargo wagons will increase the share of total freight transported through the port throughout the year. “Once we commence operations, railway transport will increase its market share of the total freight and cargo transport in the country,” he added. The SGR project is also expected to reduce accidents and destruction of roads.Sixty open wagons were received in February.
