A Kenyan man has been slapped with a life sentence by a Texas court in the United States after he was found guilty of rape.
Anthony Mamboleo Nyakeo, a nursing assistant, was on Thursday found guilty of raping a 74-year-old patient at the Woodridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Grapevine.
The court was told that the accused committed the act on the granny who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and who cannot walk or feed herself on January 2018.
The prosecution said that the convict took advantage of the victim's mental status and condition to commit the act, which the jury took into account during the sentencing.
“She could not speak, feed herself or use the bathroom on her own as she wore a diaper and relied on staff,” lead prosecutor Jordan Wolfe told the jury.
He added that the said crime was later found out by nurses taking care of the woman after they detected blood in her underwear.
“After the assault, nurses caring for the patient found blood in her underwear. An exam found evidence of vaginal tearing consistent with sexual abuse, and staff recovered DNA during a sexual assault exam that was eventually used to tie Nyakeo to the assault," he added.
In his defence, Nyakeo denied the charges saying that he only gave the woman a shower and took her to the dining area.
He added that someone might have taken his DNA from a used condom and planted it on the woman to frame him.
The prosecution said that Nyakeo is not new to such, and has also been harassing his colleagues sexually, adding that he also attempted to leave Texas during the probe.
His colleagues also testified against him, in a case that saw all-male staff at the facility give their DNA samples.
