Police officers in Meru County on Tuesday nabbed Buuri East Deputy County Commissioner Peter Jumwa who is said to have been driving while drunk.
The commissioner was arrested at Kiirua Town within the county, after a tipoff from the citizens, before he was locked in a police station for several hours.
The Nation reports that the state officer was arrested was by officers under the command of county traffic boss Chief Inspector Gideon Lekakeny.
The paper further reports that no charges were pressed against the DCC, who was put in custody for 5 hours then was later driven to his home shortly after 8 pm.
In a phone interview on Wednesday, the official who is said to have been on a drinking spree, confirmed his arrest, but noted that the matter has since been solved and he is back in office.
“Yes, it happened yesterday. It is settled. That was a personal issue but it has been resolved,” he said.
However, police sources indicate that the matter was transferred to the National Government Coordination Department for father processing.
Further, the sources told the paper that Mr. Jumwa is staring at drunk driving charges.
The paper has established that he was arrested in the full glare of the public, but did not put up any resistance.
