A police officer and an assistant chief in Nakuru have been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over claims of extortion.
In a tweet on Wednesday, the DCI said; ''TWO SUSPECTS were today arrested by @DCI_Kenya Detectives based in Nakuru North in connection with the offence of Extortion Contrary to Section 300(1)(a)&(b) of the Penal Code. The two; @PoliceKE Corporal Reuben Maina of Bahati P/Station and Mugwathi Ass. Chief Joseph Waweru."
They allegedly extorted Sh80,000 from a person who had gone to ask for help from them.
DCI said the two also threatened to accuse the complainant of defilement.
"The two suspects were arraigned in court today & charged accordingly," the DCI noted in part of another tweet.
The government has on various occasions cautioned its employees to avoid colluding or asking citizens for money or other favours to help them.
This is not the first time a police officer has been arrested in connection to extortion.
Last week, a court employee was also arrested for extortion.
