Prof Yash Pal Ghai, who previously served as the Kenya Constitutional Review Commission (KCRC) chairman, has taken a swipe at President Uhuru Kenyatta over what he has termed poor governance.
Speaking at Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) on Saturday, Ghai blamed the Uhuru of not ensuring the implementation of some sections of the current constitution especially on the devolution.
''The President has let us down on this. I thought President Uhuru had more potential and ought to have been more involved in problems afflicting the common mwananchi. The President has completely ignored his own obligation. It is with great sorrow he has let us down on this,'' he said as quoted Standard.
This came after Ghai and other human rights activists including David Ndii were prevented from addressing a meeting dubbed Okoa Mombasa which according to TUM management was due to security issues.
''We were poised to discuss devolution issue. The promulgation of the Constitution had brought forth fortunes for a vibrant Kenya where all would cherish and prosper and remain united,'' Ghai said.
Muslim for Human Rights (Muhuri) chairman, Khelef Khalifa has since threatened to take the matter to court because they had followed due procedure to access the hall they were to use.
''We had booked well in advance and made the requisite payments of Sh25,000 for hire of the university hall. On Friday, the university management called us and said that we could not go on with the meeting,'' he said.
Ghai's sentiments came amid calls to amend the law. President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga have already endorsed BBI team which is set to table the report.
