Stress can have devastating consequences especially when you don't deal with it. It can affect your body in one way or another and interfere with the normal functioning of the body as well.
Different conditions have been linked to stress. They are reported to be caused by it.
Joseph Goldberg, MD, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine explains the different conditions associated with chronic stress;
1. Diabetes
Stress can negatively impact your blood sugar level by causing it to increase. It is also believed to lower the level of insulin hormones that aid in controlling the glucose level in the bloodstream. Stress may pose risks to people with type 2 diabetes as it raises the glucose level.
2. Obesity
Various factors such as stress bring about obesity. According to Jay Winner, MD, an author of 'Take the Stress Out of Your Life' and director of the Stress Management Program for Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara, Calif, this condition causes higher levels of cortisol, a hormone that heightens fat which is deposited in the abdomen.
"Stress causes higher levels of the hormone cortisol and that seems to increase the amount of fat that's deposited in the abdomen," says Winner.
3. Asthma
Apart from exposure to allergens, smokes and dust particles, people fall victim to this scourge due to chronic stress. It usually causes the release of certain hormones which lead to inflammation of the airways of the lungs hence sparking asthma attack.
