The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday responded to allegations raised by Siaya Senator James Orengo against the commission.
Orengo had on Monday accused the IEBC of failing to conduct a free and fair election. He further termed the electoral body as a 'criminal enterprise'.
He reflected back on the recommendations of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report which also advocate for the disbandment of IEBC.
In a rejoinder on Wednesday, IEBC in a statement said Orengo's remarks were disrespectful saying that the the ganecy will not be a "punching bag for political mileage".
The poll agency challenged the senator to resign over the remarks he made citing that he had insulted the constitution.
“The senator is an elected member of the Senate who is, therefore, a product of the same alleged criminal enterprise. If indeed, he stands by his sentiments he should honourably resign to gain moral grounds to criticise the institution that oversaw his election to the Senate," read part of the two-page statement.
On calls for its disbandment, IEBC said its plans to conduct 2022 general elections are already in place.
“Voter education, voter registration and stakeholder mapping and engagement are continuous processes that IEBC undertakes to ensure electoral processes are transparent, participatory free and fair,” IEBC stated.
IEBC stated that it has learnt vital lessons from shortcomings of previous elections.
