Gianni Infantino, the boss of the football world governing body FIFA, has proposed that the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) be held after every four years and not after every two years as is the case.
Mr Infantino made the game-changing proposal in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, in a forum that was graced by delegates.
He made the case that holding the tournament after every two years had not developed soccer on the African continent.
"I propose to organise the Africa Cup of Nations every four years rather than two years," the Fifa President said as quoted by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
."The CAN [Africa Cup of Nations] generates twenty times less than the Euros. Having a CAN every two years, is that good at the commercial level? Has this developed the infrastructure? Think about spending it every four years," the FIFA president added.
Infantino's intervention comes in the wake of the reversion of the AFCON calendar to January and February.
The next edition of the continental showpiece will be held in 2021 in Cameroon.
Kenya is hoping to feature in the next edition having qualified for the 2019 edition that was staged in Egypt.
The Harambee Stars are in Group G alongside Egypt, Togo, and Comoros.
