'Educating a girl-child is like educating the whole nation' is a phrase that is common among many parents and guardians.
Girl-child education is now taken seriously, but in Uasin Gishu, when a female child conceives while still taking her studies, that may mark the end of her education.
Parents whose children get pregnant while still in school have now been warned against marrying off their daughters, and instead urged to take them back to schools.
Speaking at Kaptanglas Village in Uasin Gishu County during a mentorship program to address challenges facing girls in that region, leaders lamented over rampant cases of teenage pregnancies that have led to mass cases of girls dropping out of schools.
Men who have been taking advantage of such girls due to poverty have also been put into notice.
"If our girls become pregnant, please, take care of the baby so that the mother can go back to school. I'm sure there is a policy for re-admission," said Mercy Cherop, a mentor in a video shared on YouTube by NTV.
Turbo MP, Janet Sitiene also warned against marrying under-age.
"If your child becomes pregnant or is defiled/raped, we won't allow you to destroy the children that are still under-age. We won't allow you to perform a Kangaroo Court to square those case of impregnating or defiling or raping," the MP said.
The mentorship program was organised by area leaders and people from that region who have succeeded in different spheres.
