Heavy rain started pounding several areas of the Lake side county at 4am, and went on until about 11am.

This resulted to flooded roads, and homes being submerged by water, with several people being stuck inside.

Among the most affected areas is Nyamasaria. Kenya Red Cross officials in conjunction with residents have moved in to help some of the affected families.

“The situation here is very bad. Water is all over, there’s no movement and some people are stuck in houses,” said Jeremiah Asikoye, a boda boda rider.

On Wednesday night, there were signs of heavy rainfall but it failed to rain only for the heavy showers to be witnessed on Thursday morning, as residents were still tucked in their beds after packed Christmas celebrations.

Human rights activists in Kisumu among them; Boniface Ogutu Akach, and Caren Omanga are now calling for urgent rescue missions to help save lives.

By Thursday mid-day, the rains had stopped but signs of heavy downpour were still looming large.

If it rains again, the situation may move from bad to worse. Kisumu has been among counties witnessing heavy rainfall since October.
