Wajir Senator Dr Ali Abdullahi Kabreta is now facing criticism over claims that Wajir County government had not initiated any developments because of corruption.
The senator pointed out that the economy of the region was dwindling and the locals had no money. He also alleged that the suppliers had not been paid after completion of their tenders.
“The economy of the county is on its knees and the pocket of the common mwananchi has dried up. Suppliers are not paid and are closing down the business due to huge liabilities with pending bills hitting a record high,” the Senator claimed.
In response, Wajir Governor Mohamned Abdi stated that Senator Ali's statements had caused disunity in the county.
“The unsubstantiated and far-fetched remarks made by the Senator created unnecessary tension and hatred within the peace-loving residents of Wajir and was least expected of a leader from his caliber,” County Director of Press and Communications Ahmed Hussein said.
Hussein said the county government has initiated notable development projects.
"We were rated among the best indiagnostic precision and the regional laboratory three-star rating requires no telling."
"The performance of our renal unit, sub-county theatres and over 120 health facilities spread all over the county are the realities that naysayers need to contend with," he added.
He also said that the county had constructed quality roads of bitumen standards of 7km and graveled close to 150km within the last two years.
The issue of water shortage was also tackled by constructing several pans, underground water tanks and drilling boreholes.
The education sector was also boosted by the construction of 105 ECDE classrooms, dormitories for Wajir ECDE College, GBV centres at Wajir County Referral Hospital, Sh82 million bursary and sponsoring of students from humble backgrounds.
Hussein said that the county pays its staff on time despite delays from Treasury.
The county further dismissed claims by the Senator that there was misappropriation of over Sh150 million emergency funds by clarifying that there was no fatalities.
“The emergency fund, just like any other public fund has been subjected to audit and over sighting by the relevant authorities and no queries were raised,” the county said.
The county advised the residents to ignore propaganda and focus on development.
