The secretary of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli has answered critics who contend that his interest in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is political in nature.
Speaking on Saturday in Kitui County, the renowned trade unionist denied the charge, saying that his interest in the initiative is ensuring the welfare of Kenyan workers.
"I am not a politician, do not think that I am a politician. My only interest in the BBI is workers. (Mimi sio mwanasiasa, msifikiri mimi ni mwanasiasa. Interest yangu kwa BBI ni wafanyikazi)," the COTU SG said.
Atwoli has faced accusations that he is interested in pushing the political agendas of some individuals.
Among his harshest critics are the allies of the deputy president Dr William Ruto who contend that he is a puppet of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.
Atwoli has positioned himself as one of the staunchest high profile supporters of the BBI, warning those fighting the initiative that they risk being consigned to oblivion.
The initiative's crusade went to Kitui County where the leaders of the county gave their recommendations.
The meeting was the fourth coming after meetings held in Kisii, Kakamega, and Mombasa counties.
