On Tuesday Kisumu All Stars went down 2-1 against hosts Sofapaka in a Kenya Premier League (KPL) encounter at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
It was the 8th time the Kisumu County Government sponsored side had lost this season after 13 rounds of matches.
Previously, the team had lost to Ulinzi Stars, Nzoia Sugar, Western Stima, Posta Rangers, Mathare United, AFC Leopards and Zoo Kericho.
Led by veteran coach Henry Omino, the Blues Eagles as the team is widely known in football circles has only collected maximum points against Wazito FC and Kariobangi Sharks, while managing a draw against KCB, Sony Sugar and Chemelil Sugar respectively.
There’s no doubt that the team is under-performing in its maiden season in KPL. Despite the poor form, Kisumu All Stars may, after all, survive relegation at the end of this season.
The team is currently ranked 16th on the 18-teams-KPL table. The side has a paltry 8 points, same as 15th placed Kariobangi Sharks. Chemelil Sugar is ranked 17th with a single point, while Sony Sugar lies bottom.
Sony Sugar is already automatically relegated after the team initially failed to turn up for three KPL matches due to financial constraints leading to direct relegation.
This means one team has to follow Sony Sugar at the end of this season. My opinion is that the team to follow Sony Sugar down will not be Kisumu All Stars if proper mechanisms are put in place between now and end of the season.
Players such as Wesley Kemboi, Anthony Obonyo, Jeckonia Ogendo, Alvin Ochieng, Bobby Kwaka, Arthur Ochung, Gerrishom Arabe and Eric Otieno must play for the All Stars badge.
If the lads continue putting up a spirited show, I can bet my last coin that Kisumu All Stars will not be relegated at the end of the season.
