Speaking on Thursday, Uhuru revealed that the country has signed a deal that will see it export 200, 000 barrels of the product extracted from Turkana County.

While chairing a cabinet meeting, Uhuru said that the nation has now joined the list of oil producing countries, though the government has remained mum on the details of the buyer.

''We are now an oil exporter. Our first deal was concluded this afternoon with 200,000 barrels at a price of $12 million," said the Head of State.

Attempts by the Nation to know the buyer were thwarted by State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena who also kept her silence, claiming that "those details are not out".

Uhuru said that the proceeds of the new venture will go a long way in bettering the living standards of Kenyans.

He further expressed his readiness to lead the way in ensuring that monies acquired through the trade properly utilized.

"So, I think we have started the journey and it is up to us to ensure that those resources are put to the best use to make our country both prosperous and to ensure we eliminate poverty,” he added.

The mining and movement of the oil from Turkana and Mombasa is being done by London-based Tullow Oil firm.
