Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has expressed disbelief in the county's population, following the release of recent census statistics.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Monday released results showing that the county has 393,177 people, which the county boss has challenged.
According to him, the details indicate that the county population has only grown by 27,847 people in ten years, after recording 365,330 in the 2009 head count.
The county boss alongside Tharaka Member of Parliament Gitonga Murugara has vowed to challenge the results in court to have the exercise repeated in the county.
"These are wrong figures. We will petition the KNBS to review the whole exercise in our region in order to get the right population," Njuki said as quoted by Daily Nation.
According to the governor, the county should be having around 428,959 out of 105,152 homesteads, with the MP saying that Tharaka Nithi should be having an upward of 500,000 people.
Njuki noted that the county had 213,154 voters in 2017, insisting that the statistics have a problem and need to be reviewed.
"There is a clear indication that these figures are not true. That is why we would like to know [what happened],” he said.
