Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has nominated Ann Kananu Mwenda to be his deputy.
Digital Innovation Secretary at State House Dennis Itumbi has congratulated Mwenda following her nomination as Sonko’s deputy.
In a tweet, Itumbi said that he wishes Mwenda the best of luck as she assumes the new role in the office. He also said that the nominations come a year after the demise of her husband, Philip Muthathai.
“A year ago, Anne, lost her husband - Philip Muthathai. We mourned and asked many questions. Today, Anne is promoted from Director to Deputy Governor. Congratulations! Go on and serve," he said.
The nomination comes amid calls to impeach him over the alleged loss of Sh357 million from the county government. Mwenda assumes office following the resignation of Polycarp Igathe.
The county boss has been operating without a Deputy despite pressure from different factions. Sonko had hinted that he was going to nominate a woman in the position before he went ahead and pulled the move.
The nomination of the Deputy comes at a time when the Members of the County Assembly are set to meet on Tuesday to address the alleged leadership crisis in Nairobi County. The county boss has been serving alone since Igathe left the position.
