England's and Olympique Lyonnais Lucy Bronze has been named UEFA Women's Player of the Year.
The development will come as great news to Kenyans as Ms Bronze was involved early this year in efforts to raise funds for Kenyan girls struggling with poverty.
Writing on Twitter on Friday after receiving the best UEFA Women's award, the English player said that she was at a loss for words and expressed her gratitude at having won the trophy.
"Words surpass me 😅Truly grateful to be named UEFA player of the year. Having played with and against so many great players this year, it really is a great honour and a huge surprise 😁 , " her tweet read.
She told the media that the award was humbling for and thanked her England and Olympique Lyonnais, teammates.
I'm ecstatic and super humbled to have won the award, up against two fantastic players.
"I want to say a huge thanks to the England team. We had a great summer and I don't think I would have won this award if it wasn't for them. It's the same with the Lyon team. We had an amazing season, we won the treble and any one of those girls could have won this award. "I want to thank both teams for pushing me to become a better player and the player that I am today." She said according to Sky News.
Bronze is the first woman of English nationality to win the award. She won the silver ball in this year's women's world cup having been voted the second-best player.
On Instagram in June, the player expressed her pride in helping poverty-stricken women in Kenya.
Liverpool's defender Virjil Van Djik was named the best UEFA male of the year, beating Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
