Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been released on Sh15 million cash bail after being a guest of the state for five days since his dramatic arrest on Friday in Voi.
He can now sigh with relief, however, with the beleaguered county chief barred from accessing office, it leaves Sonko in a real battle in the leadership of the city-county.
With County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi now poised to take over the leadership of the devolved unit, where does this leave the former senator?
Borrowing from the political headache facing Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, is Sonko headed there? Most likely.
Since he was barred from office on accounts of corruption, Waititu, a key Sonko associate, has faced humiliating political times where he has often been politically isolated.
The Sonko corruption case will no doubt drag for some time. And with the governor now at the periphery of decision making in the county, he has reigned supreme for the last 2 years, it remains to be seen if he woke ever regain full control of Nairobi. And if he does, when will it be?
Is the once more brilliant political careers just about to crumble? Will Sonko just bounce from his current troubles? Well, time will tell.
