Two years down the line after President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election, memories of the build-up to the much-heated elections still rings our minds.
The first election that was conducted on 8th August 2017 which declared the then incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta the winner was successfully challenged in court by National Super Alliance (NASA) and a repeat of it was declared.
Dr Roselyn Akombe who was one of the IEBC commissioners made the headlines in the build-up to the second election that was slated for 26th October 2017 after she parted ways with the commission that was mandated to conduct a free and fair election.
Akombe resigned while abroad, a move said to have 'outsmarted' the State whom she feared could not have accepted the request at that crucial point.
As many thought that she was on an official trip to inspect the ballot printing in Dubai, Akombe was planning her 'escape' and she flew to the United States where she tendered her resignation.
''The commission in its current state can surely not guarantee a credible election on October 26. I do not want to be party to such a mockery to electoral integrity,” she said in a statement sent from New York on October 18, 2017.
Her resignation was unexpected and it caused panic with questions on what would happen if Chairperson Wafula Chebukati had also resigned.
However, Chebukati decided that he would not resign as such a move would have led the nation to a crisis.
“There may be differences of opinion, but the commission is united and committed to deliver a credible, free and fair election. Our mandate is on elections and we are ready in all areas,” Chebukati said.
NASA coalition led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga boycotted the elections which President Uhuru Kenyatta later won.
