Nyanza regional commissioner James Kyanda has warned teenage girls predators of dire consequences in a bid to reduce teenage pregnancies and school dropouts.
Mr Kyanda who presided over the commissioning of a three-day free medical camp in Nyamira yesterday noted that the county was leading in the whole country with cases of early pregnancies with candidates most affected.
“Let us take care of the girl child, we must be concerned when we get a big number of these school children getting pregnant when they are in class. This show somebody has abdicated his responsibility and needs to be reminded”, said Kyanda.
In the just-concluded KCSE, over 60 students were reported pregnant as two delivered while undertaking the examination.
He told the chiefs to ensure that the men responsible for pregnancies must be identified and arraigned for defilement.
"I want us to demand that before the teenage delivers, that the so claimed ‘husband’ must be there during birth so that he can be arrested and charged for defilement, we must end this irresponsible behaviour of misusing our daughters”, warned Kyanda.
The commissioner at the same time warned those who were planning on doing female genital mutilation (F.G.M) on young girls. He said they will be punished by law as the act was outlawed.
He noted the FGM is normally conducted during the end year period and that Gusii region is among the hotspots where it is secretly done.
“Alongside that, we have a presidential directive derived from the UN resolutions that by year 2020 we must end female genital mutilation (FGM).I want the in-charge of security to ensure there are zero cases of FGM and that no negotiations over the same. This is a practice that is outdated and we must get rid of, we must respect the resolutions of UN”, he added.
The three-day free medical camp was organized by Inka medical association [IMA], a group of Gusii doctors drawn from across the Country, Gusii professionals and The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
