In a tweet on Friday, the DP Ruto-backing senator said that the deputy president would contest for the presidency in 2022 as a qualified Kenyan and not because he is a Kalenjin.

It was an apparent rejoinder to Kuria who appeared to express reservations about a Ruto presidency in which the Gatundu South legislator suggested that if Ruto was elected president other communities would have a reason to worry.

The Kericho senator said that there was an attempt by some politicians to instil fear in Kenyans whenever politicians from the Kalenjin community raise issues affecting their people.

"Kalenjins won't be on the ballot in 2022. William Ruto will present his credentials like any other qualified kenyan and seek support allover including ours.

"The monkey business of LaMurder types hawking fear down on us whenever we address issues affecting our people should cease," Cheruiyot's tweet read.

Kuria had taken issue with Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen's reaction to President Uhuru Kenyatta's cancelation of the Kimwarer dam project for being financially and technically unviable.

He said that Murkomen was wrong to point at the ethnic composition of the committee that handed the report on which the cancellation was based to the president.

According to the Leader of the Majority, that committee was not representative.
