Despite enjoying the backing of President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Premier Raila Odinga, the changes have been opposed by the Deputy President William Ruto camp.

Speaking on Wednesday night, the veteran politician claimed that Ruto's concern is justifiable, on grounds that the changes will throw his 2022 presidential ambitions, which he is almost realizing, off the balance.

He likened him to a man who has been promised a juicy piece of meat and who is now trying to fight off people trying to snatch the meat from him, just when he is almost getting it.

"The referendum is causing uncertainty because there was some meat being shared but is seems be disappearing. The possibilities of capturing power are reducing (Referendum inaleta kiwewe kwa sababu kuna nyama ilikuwa inagawanywa lakini sasa inaenda. Sasa nguvu za kuingia kwenye power zinadidimia)," he said.

He made the remarks on Radio Citizen's Jungu Kuu on Wednesday night, also attended by former Langata parliamentary hopeful Stanley Livondo and former Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu and hosted by Kamau Munyua.

But on his side he declared support for the proposal that seeks to among others, reinteoduce the parliamentary governance system and an expansion of the executive.

He said that he equally supports the Uhuru-Raila truce of 2018, urging Kenyans to calmly await the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce report.

"The nation should remain united before we get to know what is coming (Kabla hatujajua kinachokuja, umoja wa kifaifa ni muhimu)," he added.
