The magistrate ruled that the officer who was the victim of the assault had lost interest in the case. This comes just a day after the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) withdrew the charges.

According to the DPP,  Coast regional commander Rashid Yakubu who was allegedly physically assaulted by Sonko during his dramatic arrest on December 6, 2019, had allegedly expressed his lack of interest in the matter.

Sonko's lawyer pointed out that both the defence and the prosecution had agreed to withdraw the case.

“We are in agreement with the prosecution side to drop the case. Both parties have talked and agreed on this move,” Cecil Milner informed the court.

The prosecution had lined up four witnesses who were to issue their testimonies. The four included Commander Yakub, Voi OCS James Mwanzia and police officers Michael Muriithi, Fred Sabai, Stephen Mtawa, Ibrahim Ahmed.

The charges were labelled against Sonko a day after he was arrested for graft allegations. Former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile claimed that the woes that the government was facing stemmed from the fact that he as an ally of Deputy President WIlliam Ruto.
