Documents filed by Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) seen by The Star indicate that the governor made the claims when he sought to be released 18 years ago. Sonko lamented that he has gone through a lot of suffering citing the death of his mother and the inability of his sisters and brothers to complete school because of a lack of funds, claims that saw him released from prison.“I have undergone a lot of suffering. I lost my mother while in prison. She was a single parent and my only hope. My younger brother and sister are still in school and now depend on me. My wife was thrown out of the house and all the belonging seized,” he said.

The county boss was on Monday transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital after he fell ill overnight. The 44-year-old governor has maintained that he is innocent amid probe from the DPP.

The governor has been under investigation over the alleged misappropriation of Sh.358 million belonging to the county government of Nairobi. Sonko has, however, linked his woes to his political stand.

Since his arrest, the governor has been urging the residents of Nairobi to remain calm so that he deals with the situation for the sake of the stability of the county.

The county boss has hired a reputable team of lawyers including Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior, his Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Nelson Havi among others.
