Residents of Nguluni in Matungulu sub-county of Machakos County are up in arms over uncollected garbage bins.
In an interview with some of the locals, they lamented that the bins have been full and the county government had not collected.
Cate Kalekye, an M-Pesa operator in the market stated that due to the heavy rains, the bins are producing a foul smell as others emit murky waters.
"The bins are full and overflowing as they have not been collected for several weeks now. There is a foul smell and dirty water coming out of them due to the rain," said Kalekye.
Lewis Muia, a fruit seller said that they were afraid of contracting diseases if the garbage remained uncollected for long.
Sammy Muli, another local, urged the county government of Machakos through solid waste management to ensure the bins are emptied.
"They were always timely but this time round they have failed us. It has been weeks as the garbage goes uncollected. They should swing into action immediately and do the necessary," Muli said.
His sentiments were echoed by Nathan Kyule who said the situation needs to be solved sooner or it may become an eyesore.
Another local, Muli Silas said that when issuing the bins, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua promised that garbage will be collected in time and they are wondering what is taking them long.
The bins were recently acquired under the Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP) which is funded by the World Bank for three municipalities namely Machakos, Tala/Kangundo and Mavoko.
