National Assembly Aden Duale in an apparent change of heart, dropped his initial opposition to the Building Bridges Initiative, and now says that he supports it.
Speaking to the Sunday Standard, the Garissa Town MP said that the initiative and its taskforce are legal and properly constituted and can even be tabled in parliament.
The initiative was founded by President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga after their March 2018 truce, before which they jointly appointed the 14-member team to spearhead the pursuit for peace and national cohesion.
Duale who initially aplearwd to opposed to the same now says that he even united with minority boss John Mbadi to table a motion in support of the BBI taskforce after its formation.
“Together with Minority Leader John Mbadi, we tabled a motion on the BBI and therefore the initiative is well constituted and can have its report received by Parliament," he told the Sunday Standard.
He added that he fully supports the referendum expected to emanate from the taskforce's ongoing report writing, if it will bring forth a return to the parliamentary governance system.
The leader who hails from the minority Somali community stressed on the need for changes that will give small communities equal opportunities with the currently domimant ones.
“On the issue of the structure of government, Raila and I are political bed fellows. I support it because it will give equal opportunities to all the communities in the country to have a share of leadership positions," he said.
This, however, comes as a contravention to his fellow allies of Deputy President William Ruto under the Tangatanga tag, who have rejected the said referendum in it's entirety.
