Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo has expressed his reservations about the decision by the Senate to raise Kenya's debt ceiling.
Replying to Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen's tweet, the Wiper legislator appeared to question the wisdom of the hugely controversial decision.
Murkomen had called for Parliament to work with the executive to ensure Kenya only goes for cheap loans.
"Parliament will also work with the executive to come up with legislation that establishes accountable debt register with clear indication of projects funded to ensure equitable distribution of projects across the country and to protect future generations," he tweeted.
Mutula wondered why the move had been ratified without critical and fundamental questions being asked by legislators.
The senator described those who ratified the raising of the debt ceiling as cheerleaders.
"Is this the same Parliament that has approved increase on debt ceiling from 1.2 trillion to 9 trillion in exactly 5 years without asking for a memo pad? #416 cheerleaders," the senator said.
The raising of the debt ceiling came in the context of concerns from a section of Kenyans about the country's debt level.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has justified his borrowing spree, saying money borrowed is being pumped into development projects in a bid to inject life into his Big Four Agenda.
