According to Kisumu County Police Commander Benson Maweu, the fire might have broke out while one of the guards guarding the area was burning rubbish.

He said that the rubbish included gas cylinders, with the police thing exploded, resulting in the fire which later spread to other places, leaving several stalls burnt.

"A guard was burning rubbish when sparks of fire flew to a stall which had gas cylinders, leading to an explosion," said the police boss, who said that the fire destroyed 20 stalls.

However, he said that no injuries were reported, adding that most of the affected stalls contained tyres, motor engine oil, gas cylinders and other items.

The area is not new to fire breakouts, after another one was reported in July last year, which left 19 vehicles destroyed and several spare part shops burnt.

A landlord was arrested in line with the inferno, on grounds that he had been threatening his tenants with unspecified consequences over unpaid rent.

The destroyed vehicles were in a garage store awaiting repair, in an incident that saw millions of shillings worth of property lost.
