In a press conference on Saturday, Oguna, a former spokesman for KDF, said the request should not be taken on bad faith, adding that implementation will be enforced.

He said bar users should consider watching English Premier League games at home, wondering why they never watch local leagues like KPL.

“This weekend watch the premier league at home, let the children see how happy you become & how you jump when your team scores," he said.

The exercise is expected to take place for one week and is usually used whenever the government is planning for distribution of resources.

On Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i said bars will open from 2pm to 5pm over the weekend thereafter, people are expected to retreat to their villages.

Dr Matiang'i also said that alcohol addicts can still use the local joints provided that they avail themselves for counting on Saturday and Sunday.

“Social places like bars are open between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday. You can go and drink then. Experienced people tell me that if you’re not satisfied with alcohol in those hours, then there is a problem with you,” he said.

In 2009, Kenya had a population of 39 million and the figure is expected hit 50 million this year. For the first time, intersex people will be counted.
