Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has warned leaders in possession of firearms with fake licenses.
The CS has given the leaders an ultimatum of seven days to comply with the regulations of gun ownership failure to which an unspecified action will be taken against them. The audit has shown that 4000 firearms owners have fake licenses.
The number includes MPs, senators, governors, woman representatives and MCAs. The CS said that lawmakers who did not appear for the vetting of their firearms will be in trouble when the ultimatum expires.
The State will embark on the exercise of mopping up guns whose owners will not prove their ownership through the licenses.
“If you are holding a fake firearm certificate or forgot to go for vetting or maybe you did not see the notice, you should report to the nearest police station and surrender,” he warned, as quoted by Daily Nation.
He noted that some leaders have been caught in drama in night clubs and other places thereby causing trouble because of possessing guns. He said that it is difficult to probe incidents of this kind.
Matiang'i appealed to leaders to cooperate with his office for the sake of peace. He further noted that illegal firearms owners need to abide by the law.
