Speaking on Tuesday during the launch of the "Climb for Justice Campaign", at Serena Hotel in Nairobi, Mutunga said that the country has continued to lag behind in terms of development because of poor leadership.

He alluded that the political class has not offered solutions to the suffering population. Mutunga said that time has come for the activists to wrestle power from political conmen for the sake of change in the leadership.

The retired CJ said that change is inevitable and activists should be part of the ruling class. He further reiterated that it is absurd that some politicians have taken advantage of the people’s problems for their selfish gains.

Mutunga further noted that there is no way activists will keep away from matters of leadership and expect better days for the people of this nation.

“I know a lot of you still believe in political non-partisanship but you cannot be neutral in this country to the oppression and the kind of political leadership that we have. But the greatest defense we will ever get as human rights defenders is when you contest for political power," said Mutunga.
