Speaking to members of the press on Wednesday, the US diplomat warned that corruption was robbing Kenyans of opportunities, saying that the citizens had a duty of demanding integrity from their elected leaders.

"But in regards to thievery, as I call it, any time we tolerate thievery we deprive the people of the benefits that are really supposed to be theirs. Anything that we give to someone that is stealing from us takes away from the opportunity for our children, opportunity for our families, and for our communities and so we should not tolerate it, " the US ambassador said

McCater's intervention comes in the context of a crackdown on high profile individuals alleged to have engaged in the embezzlement and plunder of public resources.

Among those facing charges of corruption include governors and cabinet secretaries.

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich are under investigation over corruption-related charges.

Both have denied the charges facing them.

McCater assured the Kenyan people that the United States government led by President Donald Trump would offer unrelenting support to Kenya's war on corruption.
