Sonko, who is facing a multiple of corruption and economic crimes charges, has hired Mutula as his part of his legal team which is made up of other high profile lawyers.

The advocates include Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, Makueni MP Dan Maazo, Cecil Miller and Harrison Kinyanjui.

Nelson Havi, Alphonse Mutinda, George Kithi, Michael Osundwa are also part of the flamboyant governor's defence team.

However, it is the presence of Mutula and Murkomen which has raised eyebrows, with some critics citing conflict of interest in have some senators representing the governor, who they are supposed to oversight.

Atandi has, however, dismissed the argument and termed them as misplaced, saying there was no law outlawing legislators from operating law firms.

"Kelele (Noises) about Senator Mutula representing Gov Sonko in corruption case are all misplaced. Does the law criminalize MPs/Senators from running legal firms? How is the practice of law compromising the war against corruption?" he tweeted on Tuesday.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei also defended Mutula and Murkomen saying there was nothing wrong in having them acting as defence lawyers for Sonko.

“I want to assure Kenyans that there is no direct conflict of interest when senators or members of parliament represent their clients…” Cherargei said during a morning show on Citizen TV.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja is among leaders who have faulted the duo for representing the embattled county boss in court.
