The Member of Parliament for Endebess Dr Robert Pokose has weighed into the debate, that a constitutional amendment should be done so that President Uhuru Kenyatta, can run for office in 2022.
Speaking to members of the press on Saturday, the outspoken legislator urged the head of state, who is serving his second and final term, to retire peacefully in 2022.
Dr Pokose said that it is unacceptable for President Kenyatta to run for office after serving his two terms.
"He has served his two terms and he pledged to preserve the integrity of the Kenyan constitution. Preserving the integrity of the constitution means respecting the constitution of the country. He has done his two terms and should, therefore, go home and rest. (Ameserve term zake mbili na yeye aliapa ya kwamba nitatunza katiba ya Kenya. Kutunza katiba ya Kenya ni kusema ya kwamba ataheshimu katiba ya Kenya. Yeye amefanya term zake mbili aende nyumbani akapumzike)," Dr Pokose said.
There have been concerns that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report could be amended to pave way for the president to run for office.
The Constitution of Kenya bars a head of state who has served two terms from seeking office.
To change that provision, Kenyans will have to go to a referendum.
