A total of 1.7 million Kenyans beat the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) June 30 deadline to file their tax returns, the taxman said in a statement.
KRA maintained that the deadline will not be extended even as thousands who thronged their offices in last minute rush across the country had failed to file their returns.
Those who did not take advantage of the waivered period to pay their taxes will now pay 25 per cent more or face a penalty of Sh10 000 for defaulting.
Turnover tax returns charged on companies will attract Sh5 000 fines while other taxes will either attract 25 per cent more or Sh25 000 fines, whichever is higher.
KRA said taxpayers should log onto their portal to know penalty preferred against them for failing to submit tax.
The statement by Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Today said iTax Support Centers will remain operational as usual.
The iTax platform is a secure online application system first piloted two years ago and commissioned mid last year to provide a fully-integrated and automated solution for administration of domestic taxes.
KRA has also partnered with appointed licensed and trained intermediary agents who assist taxpayers register and file their returns through the platform.
Currently, KRA has six support centres and has a client service presence in 22 Huduma Centres countrywide.
The system was rolled out in October 2013 in an effort to increase efficiency and ensure better compliance with tax laws.
