At least 17 more people have died in another grisly road accident along the Thika-Garissa Highway.
The latest accident involved a matatu and a lorry at Gatuanyaga area on Sunday night.
Police and rescue operators spent the late hours of their day on the scene to retrieve bodies trapped in the wreckage.
The accident occurred after an overtaking Nissan matatau that was heading to Kitui from Nairobi clashed head on with an oncoming lorry, KTN News reported.
Thika Traffic Base Commander Michael Lemaiyan confirmed that 13 people died on the spot. He said seven others were rushed to various hospitals including Thika Level Five hospital in critical condition but four succumbed to their injuries later.
President Uhuru Kenyatta recently directed the police and other law enforcement agencies to step up their efforts to ensure motorists obey set traffic safety rules and regulations during this festive season.
