A survey conducted by IPSOS released on Wednesday reveals that 17 per cent of residents in Nairobi have been victims of crime in the past three months, compared to the national average of nine per cent.
The poll, which had 2,067 respondents, also shows that the levels of violent crime have declined nationally from 48 per cent in November 2015, to 35 per cent in June this year.
But in the last eight months, non violent crimes have gone up marginally by 15 per cent.
According to IPSOS, less than half of crime victims reported the matter to the police, with 54 per cent saying they did not want to take the matter further, and another 40 per cent feeling the police are inefficient and corrupt.
Three per cent of respondents said the police station was too far and another three per cent said they fear the police.
The proportion of Kenyans who did report and were not satisfied with their response has increased, with 44 per cent saying, there was weak or or no follow up on the investigations, 32 per cent saying there was slow or no response to reports of evidence and another 22 per cent saying there was corruption.
