A 17-year old boy in Nandi County has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing cooked meat and a thermos flask, an offence that he committed in 2013.
According to estimates provided by the court, the stolen food and the thermos cost about Sh1,750.
It was an act that did not go well with the magistrate who decide that stealing should be punished hence gave the teenager five years in the cold.
The boy who cannot be named for ethical reasons is said to have broken into his relative's hotel in Chebarbar in Nandi County nearly three years ago where he committed the offence.
He admitted committing the offence but was very remorseful.
However, the Judge was not moved as he decided that he spends five years in prison instead of the seven years that the offence attracts.
"The sentence meted out for five years was well within the law. This court will not alter the ruling on the mere ground that it might have somewhat passed a different sentence," Justice Kanyi Kimondo ruled.
The offender was a primary school pupil at the time he committed the offence.
