A 17-year-old boy has drowned in Masinga, Machakos County.

Daniel Muoki, a class seven pupil at Mukayauni Primary School drowned in River Mathauta on Sunday.

Confirming the incident, Masinga assistant county commissioner John Kisang said the deceased was swimming in the river when the tragedy befell him.

Kisang said the boy who was in company of his friends when he reportedly drowned could have gotten stuck under rocks and died.

"On Sunday at around 5.00pm, I was notified of the tragedy. Daniel Muoki, accompanied by his friends had gone swimming when he drowned," Kisang said.

He said the victim's friends raised alarm attracting residents who rushed to the scene for their rescue.

Kisang said locals helped in retrieving the body.

He told the residents to be vigilant and caution their children against swimming in swollen rivers unattended  during the ongoing heavy rains pondering the region and other parts of the country.

The deceased's body was moved to Yatta Funeral Home.
