Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has sought to delink himself from the Tanga Tanga group, a faction of the ruling Jubilee Party said to be championing for Deputy President William Ruto's future ambitions.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator noted that he finds it offensive being referred as a member of the group, despite his closeness to the DP.
He termed the tag insulting, observing that those using it are as well attacking President Uhuru Kenyatta who passed the nickname to the DP, thanks to his many cross-country development trips.
"I find it insulting when people call us ‘Tangatanga’. The term was first used by the president. I wonder what the president thinks when we are in the public space because in a way, using that term is like ‘attacking’ the president," Murkomen said during an interview on JKL on Wednesday night.
He said that the same is the feeling on the side of the DP, who also seems uncomfortable with the tag, despite being deemed the leader of the brigade.
The vocal legislator noted that Ruto has personally been very careful not to use the tag in his engagements, proof that he too doesn't like being referred to as that.
"The DP has been very careful not to use the word ‘Tangatanga'. He usually just refers to that as ‘the work the president gave him," he added as tweeted by Citizen TV.
