The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) has been pitched by its proponents to the people of the Coast as having solutions to the long-running issue of land
Renowned lawyer and socio-political commentator Alutalala Mukhwana is not optimistic that the BBI will resolve the historical issues around the land that the people of the coast have suffered.
Speaking on Thursday night on the Kenya Television Network (KTN), Mukhwana did not mince his words, saying that the BBI would not resolve the land problem.
He held the view that the Ndung'u Report had been compiled to address the issue but was left to gather dust on a shelf.
"The people of the coast should not be lied to that the BBI will resolve the land issue. We had the Ndung'u Report to address that issue but it was not implemented. If it was not implemented, the BBI will also not be implemented. (Wasidanganywe Wapwani kwamba BBI itasuluhisha swala la ardhi. Maana iwapo hio Ndung'u Report ipo na haiguswi hata hio BBI haitahaitaguswa), " the lawyer said. (8:08-8:19)
The coastal region continues to grapple with the issues of landlessness and squatters.
Successive governments have not succeeded in completely resolving the issue.
During the BBI meeting at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in the port city of Mombasa, the Coastal governors bare land which had not been put to use to be given to squatters.
