Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has warned President Uhuru Kenyatta against campaigning in Kibra for Jubilee party candidate McDonald Mariga.
Speaking on KTN's Pointblank show on Wednesday, the Machakos county boss advised the Head of State to occupy himself with other important things instead of campaigning for the former Harambee Stars forward.
Governor Mutua held the view that the president hitting the campaign trail in Kibra would endanger the progress made under the handshake with his erstwhile political adversary veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.
"I think that would be the mistake of the century and Uhuru Kenyatta has to keep himself busy doing important things than going to Kibra to campaign, because that is going to bring into place a confrontation of ideology of mind, and get this country totally confused," he said.
His remark comes days after President Kenyatta endorsed Mariga, fueling speculation on what the impact on the handshake may be.
Mariga will face off with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Imran Okoth, brother to late Kibra MP Ken Okoth.
Other candidates in the race include; Amani National Congress (ANC) candidate Eliud Owalo, Ford Kenya's Ramadhan Butichi, among others.
The Kibra seat fell vacant after Ken Okoth lost his battle with cancer in July.
Kibra constituency is an ODM turf having been represented by Odinga when the constituency was still part of the larger Lang'ata constituency.
President Kenyatta is yet to give a clear indication whether he will join Mariga on the campaign trail.
