Passengers travelling to Lamu County on Sunday evening escaped unhurt after the bus they were travelling in veered off the road and rolled at Maisha Masha along the Lamu-Mombasa road.
Mpeketoni OCPD Harrison Njuguna who confirmed the accident said it occurred after the area received heavy rainfall.
Njuguna said the heavy downpour witnessed in the area made the road to be slippery which made the Tawakal bus veer off the road.
Njuguna said the driver of the bus was not speeding on the Lamu-Garsen road adding that the road is under construction and it becomes slippery when it rains.
Forty-eight passengers aboard the bus managed to escape unhurt but the driver of the bus sustained minor injuries on the hands and legs.
“There was an accident involving a Tawakal bus at Maisha Masha. It’s only the driver who was injured on the hands but the rest of the passengers escaped unhurt. The bus wasn’t speeding. The accident has generally been caused by slipperiness on the road due to the rains being witnessed at the moment. Some parts of the road are also in a poor state as construction is still underway,” said Njuguna as quoted by nation.co.ke.
One of the passengers, Yusuf Omar, said the area has witnessed a number of accidents due to the bad state of roads.
Omar asked the government to fast track completion of the Lamu-Garsen route to reduce the number of accidents.
“All these accidents are caused by the dilapidated state of our road. Our road is currently under construction and this makes navigation tricky even for the most experienced of drivers. Some parts of the road are still having huge potholes and others are very slippery. We want it completed,” said Omar.
