The fate of the teachers hangs in balance as they wait for the commission to shed more light on what transpired before their names went missing from the list after months of waiting.

Retired tutors are in pursuit of Sh42.3 billion court award for their salaries and pension arrears.

The retired teachers now risk walking away empty-handed if their names are not traced back to the list. In a document, seen by Daily Nation, only 20,229 names appear on the pension list out of the possible 52000.

On its part, the commission has claimed that it received Sh16.7 billion and not Sh42.3 billion for the payment of the retirement benefits of the tutors.

The amount is meant for the payment of their pension and not salaries. The commission wants the High Court to intervene in the matter after retired teachers raised concern over the amount.

Through its lawyer Lawrence Karanja, the commission is hopeful that the court will explain to the tutors about the amount it received towards their payment.

The commission’s chief executive Officer Nancy Macharia said has insisted that only teachers who retired between July 1, 1998, and June 30, 2003, will benefit from the pension scheme.

“Teachers who retired before that time are not entitled to the award,” she said.
