The clock is ticking and the 2022 election is fast approaching.
If he plays his cards well, Deputy President William Ruto will be elected Kenya's fifth President. And do that, he must choose the best person to be his running mate.
So, are these people that can pair up with Dr Ruto to form the next government?
Kalonzo Musyoka
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is no doubt an obvious choice. Having spent nearly all his entire public life in politics, the former Vice President is equal to the task.
His ticket with ODM leader Raila Odinga has on two occasions failed to take them to the "promised land" and perhaps it is time to move on.
However, it remains to be seen whether Kalonzo will readily enter into that deal. Though the DP has shown an insatiable appetite to lure the Wiper boss, he has remained non-committal. Perhaps he is weighing his options. But a Ruto-Kalonzo ticket will most likely win elections if they play their cards well.
Mwangi Kiunjuri
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri is positioning himself as a possible running mate of the DP. As he drives Dr Ruto's political agenda in Central, the veteran politician's name will no doubt be on the political deals negotiation table when the right time comes.
With over 5 million votes up for grabs in the populous Mount Kenya region, Kiunjuri might be used to deliver the votes into Dr Ruto's vote basket.
Musalia Mudavadi
The Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi is another political heavyweight whose influence and big name can be used to springboard the DP's political ambitions.
On many occasions, Ruto has urged the former Vice President to team up with him ahead of 2022. However, Mudavadi has insisted that he will not be stepping down for anyone. But with over two years remaining to the next poll, anything can happen.
If the DP can team up with any of these leaders, probably, his march to State House will be unstoppable.
