Uasin Gishu county government is planning to demolish old houses and construct new ones in Macharia Estate in Eldoret.
This led to the forceful eviction of over 1,000 tenants in the estate on Monday to pave way for the demolition and subsequent construction exercise.
An NTV video shared on Facebook by Eldoret Town News revealed the sad tales from residents who were ejected from their rented houses.
In the video, one of the tenants, who is a widow told the press how the Administrative Police entered her room and ordered her out.
"Niliongea na hawa asubuhi, wakapiga dirisha wakisema 'mama toka nje'. (I talked to them in the morning, as they knocked the window saying, 'woman come out')," said the woman.
A village elder revealed that he had received notice to vacate the estate from the area chief earlier, but people branded him a traitor when he informed them.
He further disclosed that some residents had planned to kill him for colluding with the authorities to evict them. He had to contact the OCPD to send some policemen to protect him.
Furthermore, the village elder said most of the tenants heeded the call by the authorities to leave the premises, but a handful ignored the directive, hence leading to a facilitated eviction by the security agencies.
"Wengine wengi waliondoka, wakabaki watu kama 60 (Most people left, only about 60 remained behind)," he said.
Security agencies supervised the eviction exercise of the remaining residents who packed all their belongings and moved out of the estate.
