Former Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe has reiterated his earlier remarks that President Uhuru Kenyatta has what it takes to prolong his stay in power past his 2022 retirement.
Speaking on Wednesday, the former Gatanga MP told off those from Deputy President William Ruto's side opposing Uhuru's extended stay in power.
He insisted that the head of state can become Prime Minister in 2022, and their only option to block him is by fighting him off the Jubilee Party leader post he holds.
“I challenged them (DP’s camp) to declare if they will be challenging the president for the party leader’s position since nothing stops him from continuing as party leader,” Murathe stated.
He said that though Uhuru has not declared interest in remaining in power, he can easily do it as long as he remains the Jubilee leader, going by the suggestions of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) constitutional amendments push.
"Uhuru has not said that he wants to be PM, but nothing stops him from continuing to lead the party. And if the party wins and he is the party leader, then he can be (prime minister). Remember, the president will ask the leader of the party with the majority to form the government," he added.
Similar remarks have been made by COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, who says that Uhuru is too young to go into retirement.
However, Ruto allies have called upon the president to ignore any calls to remain in power and retire in 2022.
